Gorham's indelible ability to depict a playfully charming, part egg-head, part white knight, character is a perfect match for Beckstead's story line, and his scenes are nearly seamless as he takes-on the complexity of a project that requires him to be both a dramatic actor and comedic body-double, stumbling into the quirky realms of calamity where shtick meets the road, so to speak.
However, even in his clumsy scenes, there is little to criticize, regardless of the fact that few comedic actors, since the days of Laurel and Hardy, have been able to convincingly master the "prat-fall". Of course, one exception to the rule would be the rubber menace himself, Mr. Jim Carrey.
The script is peppered with a generous portion of humorous one-liners and playful sarcasm that give the full spectrum of characters ample opportunity to shine in their respective roles, and they rarely disappoint.
Slicing through the pervasively elevated air of this PG film, are also shards of misty-eyed moments that can take viewers by surprise as the subject matter benignly delves into shadows of mortal consequence, reaching deep into the proverbial pith without over-exaggerating it, or needlessly simplifying it. And thus the realms of realism available in this movie are such that, for each and every viewer, they can become unique - and even novel - experiences that educate the soul.
Susan Misner, from her opening scene, was a joy to watch as her character stoically hung a broken heart from the burning window of her smoldering life - shattered by a recent tragedy - attempting to protect it from the suffocating environment she feels trapped within. And her eventual moment of weakness, as she breaks her silence in sobbing solitude, was a gripping scene.
The plot slowly thickens in dramatic fashion, with an eventual climaxing twist that actually caught this author off-guard, which is typically difficult to do, and I am always pleasantly surprised when this happens.
There were a few scenes that showed the fatigue of a low-budget project, and when speaking with Producer Guillermo Suescum after the screening, it was clear that the most complex and expensive chapter in the movie had shown this financial strain the most, due primarily to a faux pas where, once it had been completed, he was alerted to the fact that the cameras had malfunctioned and the entire sequence was a total loss.
Guillermo recalls the incident, saying "A huge chunk of the production money went into this one scene, shot on the bridge over the Guanos Canal which is this toxic cesspool. The weather was changing, it was like 40 degrees, and we're such a small production that we didn't have a bunch of vans to go into, and everybody was just freezing; working from 6pm to 6am and everybody was just dead after those two days; and we thought "ok, we're over the hump' ... then they came back a few days later and it turns out there was something wrong with the cameras, and it was all useless."
He did, however, add that in some ways this set-back changed the scene for the better, showing the grace and poise of a man who likely navigated this stumbling block in-stride.
I had the opportunity to sit down with writer/director Darin Beckstead, and peruse the psyche of an enchanted romantic who clings comfortably to the years of his youth, magnanimously peeling the proverbial onion with the negligible concern for spatial contexts that, in this author's opinion, only the most talented and courageous artists are capable of.
He say's that his primary focus in making "Somebody's Hero" was to "create a family film with the message 'do the right thing, under any circumstances'"
"I wanted to create something that was a throw-back to a lot of the movies that moved me when I was a kid, and I think that in a lot of ways I'm still a big kid", said Beckstead, speaking of his connection with characters of the seventies and eighties, like the silver screen's premier double agent James Bond or iconic television hero The Incredible Hulk.
Beckstead hopes that his film can appeal to kids at an early age "I think of a lot of the films that helped me, [and] guided me through my adult years, they kinda stuck with me ... the advice, the messages, the morals that were learned."
At 37, Beckstead does not appear to be the type of person who will grow old gracefully, which is a sure sign that his artistic vision will temper like a fine wine as the years progress.
In response to my noting that the subject matter "do the right thing" seems to be resonating throughout the festival, he stated "Well, I think that there seems to be a need for it, if you see it popping up like that. The world that we're living in now-a-days is just a little crazy ... whether it's in other countries, or things we see here in the United States, we need to get outside of ourselves."
When asked his opinion of the message coming out of Hollywood these days, Beckstead's view was candidly succinct, resonating relevantly "I think the message is a little blurred. There is such a focus on materialism, and what we have, what kind of car you're driving. We can tend to be very spoiled, and I hope this film can have an impact on the kids that are going to be tomorrow's leaders."
It is obvious that this silver screen sommelier is not simply seeking recognition, but instead crafting a cultured, sentimental persona as he opts for the question "what are you doing?" rather than "what are you getting paid?"
His favorite aspect of indie filmmaking is that the story remains true to the concept, rather than getting lost in the commercialism of the average Hollywood production.
"In Hollywood, you're bringing in a lot of extra writers, and you get a kind of 'too many cooks in the kitchen' situation so to speak, so that the movie ends up being vastly different from what the writer intended it to be." Say's Beckstead.
Another aspect he considers fortuitous within the field of independent filmmaking is that the producers are typically working closely with the writers and directors, and are completely on-board from the very beginning, and thus not prone to attempting to change the concept simply for the sake of profits.
Beckstead was pleased to be able to again work with producer Guillermo Suescum, who also wanted the film to stay true to the original concept. This is actually the second project the two have worked on together, the first being a short movie titled "Courage and Stupidity".
This story, he explains, was a "comedic re-imagining of Spielberg back in the eighties." Somewhat reminiscent of Stephen Spielberg's comments concerning the making of "Jaws" in an era where the lack of technological advances threatened to sink the entire project.
"It's all about persistence" Beckstead advises. "You have to believe in your concept, regardless. Spielberg had to go ahead with a movie where he couldn't show the monster until 82 minutes into the film. So he had to do this whole Alfred Hitchcock thing, not knowing what was going on under the water, but letting your imagination play on the whole thing. And that eventually was a major contributor to the success of the film."
"Why I bring that up is because the success we had with 'Courage and Stupidity' is in large part the reason we were able to get funding for this project. Generally short films don't make money." Beckstead informed me, saying also that it was one of the first films to secure a stand-alone distribution deal.
When asked what his primary objective is, he replied "I want to make movies where people leave the theatre and say 'hey, that guy on the screen was pretty cool', like when I was a kid."
It appears that contemporary American society, often shocked and mocked by an entertainment industry that consistently misinforms and misrepresents it, has become a rather sordid issue that concerns Beckstead, who opined "back in the day, the heroes were very black and white, whereas today's heroes and role models are ... well, you know, you kind of wonder sometimes".
