Chris Brown Explodes after 'Good Morning America' Interview
Hip Hop artist Chris Brown has stormed off the set of Good Morning America today after he was asked pointed, albeit relevant, questions by Robin Roberts regarding his being charged with felony assault after brutalizing his then girlfriend Rihanna, where he pled guilty and was sentenced (quite leniently) to five years probation and six months community service.
It is also reported that his dressing room window, overlooking Times Square, was shattered shortly before Brown stormed - shirtless - out of the building.
Brown, shortly after responding to Roberts' questions with "It's not really a big deal, I mean now, I think I'm past that in my life, and I think today's the album, that's what I'm focused on, so everybody go get that album" seems to have made very little progress in the areas of self control and respect.
Brown, who gave a so-so performance of his latest song "Yeah, 3X" - which was excessively voice-modulated and too "studio" to be truly inspriring - seemed to grow increasingly agitated at yet another female, when challenged politely by Roberts during the interview.
It can certainly come as a shock to those who have so much to lose, when they find themselves and their indiscretions at the mercy of the limelight that had previously focused only on their talents.
However, there is an accountability required of those who put themselves up to people as a role model, and request that people support and defend them. Refusing to engage a subject in an interview can be a sure sign of disrespect for fans who have a right to know of whom they are supporting.
This does not mean that celebrities cannot make mistakes, but simply that they must be accountable, and never attempt to exploit their fame or fortune and use it to prevent open discussion or transparency concerning their behavior.
While it is true that many performers are backed by record labels, endorsements and investors, this is no excuse for deceiving the general public concerning things the people have every right, or reason, to know about.
The fact is that the majority of America can benefit from the open discussion of a celebrity's transgressions, and if that celebrity is an honorable person who merely made an error, and has quickly moved to correct it or make amends, then all involved become better for it.
This begins the cycles of rehabilitation and insight that enables those in the pressure of the spotlight the ability to hone their identity to the point that they are actual role models in all that they do. Rather than just a "role image" that can become less and less practical as time goes on.
This type of accountability, or ownership, can also manifest a more solid fan base, and also spread knowledge, hope and tolerance to those who may be experiencing a like difficulty.
Sure, there is always the risk that the celebrity will be excoriated indefinitely, or experience a fall from grace that will hurt them financially and in their career, but this is how the world works. Freedom is a two edged sword in that it can both create and destroy. But that is what makes it such an exquisite policy for producing benchmarks that an entire society can confidently cling to.
Freedom is a necessary function that enables the ascension to greatness from even the depths of desperation, but also enables all who seek its auspices, the opportunity to fall from grace.
Typically, in America, regardless of what a person may have gone through in the past, if they are found to be honorable and talented, they are generally given a chance to prove themselves, and show that the past tribulations have helped them to grow more resilient and redolent, and thus more capable and compassionate; if not more wise.
This is the core of the American Dream. It is what enables the United States to consistently remain at the forefront of the entertainment industry, and has produce some of the most amazing and legendary performers of all time.
On the other hand, this also creates an environment where if one is found to have betrayed their loyalty to the public - that has the ability to grant those they adore a life of adulation and luxury - or have become complacent to the point that they are simply exploiting fans - or taking them for granted, that celebrity can find all of their hopes and dreams floating adrift in a sea of controversy that sends them dashing to pieces on the rocks of shame and alienation.
In the interview, Brown say's he cares about the fans, and states that he is dedicated to them several times; even claiming that his new album titled F.A.M.E stands for "Fans Are My Everything". Although he say's it also stands for Forgiving "All My Enemies", whom he claims are "Just anybody, nay sayer's, haters, whatever the case may be, I just think, you know, being positive and promoting that is what I'm about, and that's what I'm gonna do." It is quite strange that he believes those who don't agree with him are his "enemies", but I digress.
Even more disturbing is his response to Roberts, when asked "What is it about the music for you, that helps you?"
Brown first attacks Roberts with a veiled air of contempt for her inquires, saying "You know, it helps me, it enables me to be able to escape and reach my fans, because I think when you come to mainstream America, and you come to different places in the world, they wanna always, you know, bring up the situation we're bringing up now" obviously referring to Roberts's repeated attempts to address the abusive issues Brown appears to suffer from.
Moreover, Brown then goes on to contradict himself, saying "And I think that eventually it's just about my fans, you know, it's not about that (the assault), it's like I'm doing this for my fans, so I could care less what anybody else thinks." And therein lies the affliction.
The primary problem with Brown's stated sentiments of whom he "could care less about" is that every person in this world is a potential fan, and if a celebrity cares not for even one of them, then they essentially do not care about any of them. How unfortunate that Brown, who appears to want to be a adulated performer, can be so callous, self-centered and detached from reality.
It certainly is disturbing to find that Brown has made so little progress in his life, or truly matured in concordance with the years of popularity and fortune he appears to have been the recipient of.
There is every reason to expect that his primary difficulty is in showing any true courage. He does not present any particular character traits which would exude some form of human compunction or compassion. His only desire is to be famous; to sell albums, and to hell with those who buy them.
It sounds like he will only produce music that will sell, he does not seem to look any deeper or any further than that. However, it is the creator that people so love in those who are musicians. Maybe this is why his music does not appeal to this author. The excessively studio mixed sound of Brown's voice, and the synthesized modulation present a less than talented image to be sure.
While it is certain that he can prioritize things with respect to marketing his image and his music, the fact is that this is not much more than what a sociopath is capable of. Furthermore, simply being able to promote one's self is no sign of a successful performer. One must be able to promote their fans, and seek to enrich their lives through their music and engagement of the world.
Anybody with either a savvy advisor, or a sharp intellect can sniff the wind, so to speak, and figure out what listeners may be willing to buy. However, this is little more than taking advantage of fans, and seeking to manipulate currently established concerns and fears.
Truly, the commercialism of the music industry can often hurt fans more than it helps them. Primarily due to the fact that appealing to either the lowest common denominator, or simply pitting society against itself, is often an extremely effective means of selling just about anything. This is why so often, "sex sells".
What is truly imperative at this juncture in the music industry, is for it to evolve in a new direction that see's the true talent emerge with inspiration and education at the forefront of the game. And it will require musicians who are of astonishing sagacity, natural talent and moral courage.
The music that will come out of this era will be some of the most revolutionary and legendary of all time.
It is the sign of the times, and those who are capable of stepping up to the microphones, fully engaged and unafraid, with thunderous inner spirit and soul, will break records never before even attempted.
Hopefully Brown can soon find it within his heart to respect the freedom of speech and freedom of the press in this country, and seek a little deeper into the realms of moral courage and accountability; thereby inspiring all those whom his music touches, to do the same.
